Wooden and metal spindles for stairs

When you’re trying to decide on the types of spindles for your new or existing staircase, the choice is vast as they come in all shapes and sizes. While practically they serve the purpose of filling the gap between the handrail and baserail, spindles are also one of the more decorative parts of a staircase so take time to look around and find a style that suits your property.

To help you with your decision in choosing the right type of spindle for your staircase below we take a look at the different types of wooden and metal spindles available:

Wooden spindles

Wood remains as fashionable as ever and is suitable for both modern and classic style staircases. It’s not only versatile and durable, but it’s also easy to manipulate, meaning you can achieve a multitude of interesting looks. You can treat the wood – be it staining, varnishing or painting - or you can maintain the eye-catching, natural look that has been so popular throughout the history of home renovations.

Once you’ve made your mind up that wood is the solution for you, your next choice is the type of timber and style of spindle. Our range of wooden stair spindles are available in many high-quality timbers, each bringing their own unique qualities (click to visit the range):

  • Pine is the most common timber used to manufacture spindles – it’s cost effective, easy to work with, and ideal for painting, staining or varnishing.
  • White Primed spindles are typically either birch or poplar timber, which are free of knots and are sprayed white pre-sale to a high standard.
  • Hemlock is a softwood timber similar in appearance to pine, although is stronger than many hardwoods and can be treated without issue, though equally looks great untreated.
  • White Oak is a hardwood with a few knots and a lovely pale brown appearance - again ideal for treatment, particularly for waxing or varnishing.
  • Ash is a straight grained hardwood, predominantly light brown in colour though it often has a slight tint of red. Again, it can be easily stained and polished for a high-quality finish.
  • Dark Hardwood is a darker brown with a tint of red and is often an ideal replacement for mahogany spindles.

We also offer a range of different styles to give your staircase that extra appeal (click to visit the range). These include:

Metal spindles

There is also a wide range of decorative metal spindle design options which can work effectively both on their own or combined with other materials, including wood or glass. They add real aesthetic value and ornate charm to your home, emphasising the originality of interior design and work effectively in both modern and traditional settings.

Metal spindles are both tough and durable and provide the strength you need to ensure safety. They will not lose their shape, and they will not crack. And they’re low maintenance – professionally coated and painted meaning they will not deteriorate for many, many years.

They are usually simple, easy to install, and cost effective making them an increasingly popular alternative to wooden spindles.

Our range of simple and elegant metal spindles for stairs are available. We stock Chrome spindles, Brushed Nickel spindles and Black Metal spindles.
