Considering the space under your stairs as a home office

More people are working from home than ever before – but where in the house should you work from?

The lockdowns of the past few years have shown that many jobs can still be done perfectly well remotely, and now more companies are cutting back on requirements to be in the office environment all week to allow for flexible working.

Meanwhile, a recent survey of 2,000 homeowners across Britain found 70% of people thought 2021 was the year for home refurbishments.

So, could this be the perfect time to sort your home office space?

With space at a premium in most domestic properties in the UK, homeowners often have to be savvy in how they create their new workplace environment, especially if all the bedrooms are taken up.

One of the areas often overlooked and under-utilised is the space underneath our stairs. If you’re not already using it, this space could be ideal for transformation into a mini home office. Here are a few things to consider:

Use every inch

There’s usually a lot more room under your stairs than you think. However, it obviously won’t be like another room so it’s important to maximise the space you have.

The all-important feature will be the desk. Built-in, sturdy desks work well – almost like a big shelf – which can hold your IT equipment but look stylish at the same time. If you have more room, then you may be able to be a bit more creative with your desk choice.

And don’t worry about keeping a chair there all the time if you don’t have room. You can move one from another area of the house, such as the lounge or the kitchen.

Storage

As well as a desk, you could also fit in some small drawers or some shelving to keep all your bits and pieces. Remember that unless you are planning on having a door to your new office, everything will be on show. And therefore drawers, shelves, boxes, and trays come in very handy.

Switch on, light up

A need for any home office is electricity, so if you haven’t already got plug sockets installed there, it’s probably a good idea to do so. And while they’re in, you can get a light installed to brighten up what’s sometimes one of the gloomier areas of the home into a more usable space. What’s more, the space near your stairs will often be near to your Wi-Fi router so you’ll benefit from faster connectivity.

Add some plants

Compliment the area with some greenery to give it a lift. Plants don’t have to be big to make a difference and are known to have a positive impact on mental health. In fact, according to research they can boost creativity by up to 15%.

Make it a multi-purpose area

When you’re not working from home, an area with a desk and good lighting could be perfect for children to do their homework or adults sorting out that important paperwork.
