Making the most of your landing areas

As you look to style your home around your stairs, hallways tend to get a lot of attention. This often means landing spaces get overlooked.

Along with hallways and stairs, your landing is usually one of the most well-used areas of your home. You’ll use it more times than you think, so it’s a good idea to maximise the space you have available.

Landings come in all shapes and sizes – big, small, long, wide, narrow. And you may have more than one if you have split levels or have more than two storeys in your home.

Some landings can even be big enough to be classed as a room in itself. But even in the smallest landing, there are things you can do to maximise the space and use it to its full potential. Here we share some of our top tips:

The colour of your walls

If your landing is on the small side, using light colours on the walls will help to brighten it up and make it feel bigger. In larger areas, using a darker or more daring colour on the walls – or even feature wallpaper – could help to bring an element of boldness to the landing and create a different atmosphere to the rest of the house. But it’s a good idea to make sure whatever you do goes with the rest of your home.

Choose the right lighting

The obvious way to create a lighter, more airy room is to choose the right lighting. Again, it all depends on the size and shape of your landing, but spotlights are good for smaller spaces while expansive light fittings can look great in larger areas. Using dimmer switches can also help to change up the feel of a room for different times.

And if you have the room, a free-standing light or a table lamp might complement other features to give your landing the edge.

Consider using a mirror

Strategically placed mirrors can help to make smaller areas seem larger than they are. They are particularly useful in narrow areas.

Art, photos and objects

Rather than being simply an area to pass through every so often, you can transform your landing into somewhere you don’t mind spending time in. Hanging art, photos or even interesting objects on the wall can help change the atmosphere and create talking points for any guests.

If you have windowsills or other shelves, you can also populate these with artefacts too. With the added benefit of being able to change them whenever you like to give your landing a fresh feel.

The right furniture

With so much foot traffic going through your landing, you’ll want any furniture to be kept quite simple. Console tables can be great as they’re narrow. And you can usually paint them to fit in with your surroundings.

Perfect for bookworms

Many people are now using their landing space to create a little library for their home. Combined with a little seat and a table, or even on its own, a small bookcase can be the perfect fit for the area. The tops of low-level bookcases could even be used as shelves for other items to sit on.

If you have an expansive landing, you could consider adding a comfy chair to create a little snug to take yourself away to when you want to lose yourself in a book.

Get a window seat

When your landing area has a window, it may be perfect for a window seat. A soft cushion can help to transform the area into somewhere you’d like to be, rather than something you just use to get from A to B.
