Planning Your New Staircase

Planning your new staircaseStep-by-step guide to planning your perfect Staircase:

Planning your new staircase, either in an existing property or as part of a new build, can be both daunting and exciting. In this guide we take you through the key steps to consider when planning your new stairs:

1. Consider your desired style

The first step is to visualise what you want your new staircase to look like – once finished. With so many styles to choose from, a good starting point is to consider the age and design of your home. We have a range of resources across our website to help you with your decision, including our ideas and inspiration section and brochures. You can also browse social sites like Instagram and Pinterest for some real home inspiration.

2. Consider your desired materials

Once you’ve got your style in mind, you should have narrowed down the type of materials too. Certainly, timber is likely to a dominant feature of your staircase so choosing the right type of wood is key – which we detail in our separate guide on wood. But there could well be metal too. Thankfully, there’s something to suit all budgets.

Keep referring back to previous inspiration from our ideas and inspiration section, our brochures and social media. And if you can visit stores to get a feel for the materials if you want to make total sure it’s the right fit for your home – it doesn’t necessarily even need to be stair parts you go and look at.

3. Measure up

It’s important to carefully plan out every detail of your new staircase design, including its size and configuration. It is also crucial that the final design meets the current requirements of the Building Regulations. If you’re replacing a staircase, or parts of a staircase, to help you select the right amount and size of the stair parts you’ll need, it’s safest to measure what you currently have installed.

For each section of staircase, such as your stairs and landing area, keep the measurements separate. This will make it easier for you to identify what materials are needed for your job and reduce any waste. You can make use our how to measure your staircase guide to guide you through this process step-by-step.

4. List your required parts

There’s lots of different terminology associated with stair parts with many differing parts available. When making a list of your required parts, you can get some help with the terminology using our stair part finder.

5. Confirm your budget

If you’re not working on a new build property or totally relocating your staircase, you’ll need to confirm your budget before deciding on what renovations to make. Smaller but impactful refreshes are particularly common when moving home – giving some immediate care to a staircase to bring it to your taste. For example, replacing your banister and spindles provides a quick and easy solution. You can view our guide on updating your staircase on a budget to help you decide what improvements to make.
