The latest home trends for autumn and winter 2020/21

The nights are drawing in, the heating is being turned up and winter is well and truly on its way. We’ve got you covered to make sure you’re clued up on all the latest interior design trends.

We’ve hooked up with two design experts to bring you all you need to know about dressing your home – paying close attention to those all-important entrance halls, stairs, and landing areas.

Interior designer Emmie Maycock of White Chalk says making use of natural light and using contrasting colours will enhance any entrance hallway leading to your staircase.

Emmie said: “Using a contrasting colour in your hall where possible will add depth and interest. Whether this be by using colour blocking or adding a feature wallpaper, doing so with warm autumnal tones is perfect for this time of year. Be sure to use colours which you know you’ll love heading in to spring and summer too.

“Artwork is perfect for adding interest without committing to full décor. Our top tip is to check out Desenio and their wide range of prints.

“If you want to be daring, you can add a feature colour to your banister and railings.

“Embellish your hall with a console table dressed with layers. Perhaps include a lovely wall mirror, an abstract print and a selection of accessories and plants. Pampas grass is our favourite.

“When adding in a feature paint or wallpaper for contrast, it’s important to maximise your natural light to prevent your hall from feeling dark. Keep feature windows untreated where possible to really let that winter sun shine through.”

And sharing her thoughts on the latest trends, the founder of Frintage, Ann Breen, says 2020’s year of change will help focus homeowners’ minds on making sure their places of refuge are homes we would all like to go home to.

Ann said: “As in nature, this year’s trends gather the tones, textures and even the scents of autumn to create sumptuous, warm and welcoming interiors. The earthy colours of autumn leaves, along with the plum tone of a warming glass of claret, in front of the orange, red, golden and copper hues of a roaring fire, evoke a sense of comfort and homeliness. These earthy colours are offset by a background of warm, natural tones in our choice of paint this season.

“The natural textures of wool, tweed, velvet, used in the soft furnishings, accessories and floor coverings, will enhance our autumnal interiors with a touch of luxury.”

“At this time of year, lighting in our homes is a priority. Autumn, with its darker evenings calls for a warm atmosphere that can be created as much with light as with anything else. Lamps, strategically placed, creating a comforting glow, will help complement an autumnal scheme.”
