Making the most of the windows alongside your staircase

Staircases come in all shapes and sizes, depending on the size of your property. They can be bright and airy, but also dark and confined.

There’s a good chance that your staircase is placed up against an outside wall – or at least there’s one close by or opposite. This is your opportunity to let natural light shine its glory on your staircase through a window or windows, whatever the size. We take a look at a few of the things you’ll need to consider.

Size is important

It’s a simple equation – big windows bring lots of light; while smaller windows mean you won’t get as much. So, it’s important to work out how much light will be streaming through onto your staircase. Using bold colours on your staircase walls helps to make a statement and often brings the whole area to life when you might only have a small amount of light. Whereas lots of light might mean a simple white or light coloured wall could work well. You can also check out our top tips for painting your staircase.

Make the most of your views

We don’t all live by the sea or in the countryside. But many of us have some nice views out of our windows. If you’re lucky enough to be able to show off a good view of the outside world from your staircase, make the most of it. Conversely, if your window shows you onto something a little less desirable, you could consider ‘frosting’ the window and still allow the light to shine through.

Use your windowsills

As we always say, your staircase is one of the busiest areas of your home. It gets traffic all the time. Decorative items can really help to bring a windowsill to life, but don’t put anything too precious there in case one of the many people traversing up and down accidentally knocks something off.

A chance to reduce your bills

It’s important to stay safe on your staircase, so lighting is key. But natural light entering through your windows will mean you shouldn’t have to use as much electric light, which means your energy bills should reduce. And these bills will reduce even further if your windows are thick and insulated enough to stop heat from escaping.

Paintings and artwork

The walls alongside our staircases are often beautiful blank canvases. They can be the perfect space to hang artwork – but be careful. Light streaming through windows onto artwork will make them fade. Make sure you place any artwork in a place where it won’t be directly affected by sunlight. Access is key

Windows generally don’t need lots of maintenance, but you’ll need access to your windows so you can clean them – inside and out. Make sure you have enough space to get to them when you need to, safely.

It’s not just about your stairs

We love stairs. But we also love the areas around your stairs. Light beaming through a window can help transform your landing and hallway areas. Make sure you consider these areas too.
